About \garbagefile

Based in St John’s

\garbagefile isn’t your average cache dump – they’re the spookiest drag clown on the East Coast and one of Newfoundland’s favourite performers! Renowned for their outlandish costumes and high concept performances, Backslash promises to thrill, delight, and (sexually) confuse you.

Backslash has been astonishing East Coast audiences since they first hit the stage in 2018. Their unique blend of storytelling, humour, and politics have made them a standout entity in the region. As a neurodivergent trans/non-binary artist and activist, Backslash uses their drag as a platform to dissect gender expectations and create safer spaces for gender-creative people to shine.

Backslash is a lover of horror and science fiction and draws on these worlds to help tell evocative stories of alienation and transformation. Inspired by aliens, monsters, and bad bitches, this creative cryptid delivers drama, sensuality, humour, and a hearty dose of the absurd. Backslash uses their skills in sculpture and sfx makeup to create custom prosthetics that really let their freak flag fly. Trained in textiles and garment fabrication, they create their aesthetic from top to bottom – extravagant gowns, sultry catsuits, and more tentacles than you can shake your stick at. Backslash has been training and performing in aerial circus and clown since 2016 and is at their best when they are swinging from the ceiling with their feet on their head.

Backslash also thrives in producing and choreographing large-scale, immersive performance experiences. They have become a favourite producer, host and performer at large scale festivals and events including St. John’s International Circusfest, where they strive to platform and celebrate queer and gender-creative artists, always. They work frequently with their all trans/non-binary drag collective The Phlegm Fatales, helmed by Irma Gerd of Canada’s Drag Race Season 3, who produce zany theatrical drag productions including their hit show ‘Return to Planet Phelgm’.
